I've had problems with this BlogSpot blog and haven't been able to figure out why, so I've start a new blog afresh. I'm grateful to my followers to pointing out its problems so that I did not continue to post forever more without it being viewable!

A Warwick Lizard (in Smith's)

The bright green high up in the poinciana tree caught my eye.

This type of lizard is called a 'Warwick Lizard' in Bermuda (properly, its a Barbados anole/Anolis leachii. It was introduced to Bermuda in the 1940's, originally in Warwick parish. They're gradually moving eastwards and in the last few years have become quite a common sight in Smiths.

Another bird just for fun! This is actually my Dad's (sort of tame) Blue Fronted Amazon. Not quite a Bermuda bird, but when first time visitors to Bermuda come to my house and find the parrot squawking in the tree, they're never quite sure whether to disbelieve me when I say 'oh yeah, they're pretty common on the island'!

Pitter-Pattering Sanderling

Another bird. The sanderling's tracks in the wet sand caught my eye. I had trouble taking it as he kept walking out of focus!

Something must have startled these ducks at the other end of the pond, so they were whizzing past as I came round the corner. Spittal Pond is a prime birdwatching spot in winter as many migrating birds take refuge here.

I'm fairly sure this is a black-throated green warbler. But it must be a female because it didn't have a black throat! There always seem to be a lot of warblers around at this time of year, they must be the lucky ones that are blown onto the island during the winter gales.

At one point there were at least three different types of little birds in the same tree, all singing their own songs.

This pretty 17th century stone cottage is thought to be one of the oldest buildings still standing in Bermuda. Today it is the St David's Island Historical Society Museum.

This is the cassava plant whose tuber root with be dug up, scrubbed, peeled, grated, then mixed with egg and layered with chicken to make the most delicious traditional Christmas fare - Cassava Pie. I'm getting ready for Christmas already haha!

Heydon Trust Chapel

I thought it was time to show another photograph of the little Heydon Trust chapel in Somerset, this time looking slightly more obviously a chapel.

In the previous post (24th August) I was interested in the architecture of the external water tank in the rear. But on this side the buttresses are also an interesting feature. The prop-open window blinds show off another vernacular feature of Bermuda buildings - keep the sun off and the rain out while letting light in and keeping the inside cool.

Pitman's Pond, on the Somerset Long Bay East nature reserve. This piece of property was bought through the 'Buy Back Bermuda' initiative of the Bermuda National Trust and the Bermuda Audubon Society which collected donations from the public. Now this land will be saved from any future development.

Over at Tobacco Road, NYD has been noticing more scooters on the roads in Tokyo as people strive to beat the credit crunch. I knew these were the way forward a long time ago! They're gas rodents + no getting stuck in traffic jams or driving round and round looking for a parking space! Cockburn Cut Bridge links the Dockyard on Ireland Island North, to Ireland Island South. This is facing from the Great South through to the open ocean. I painted this on a watercolour workshop outing with Chris Marson. I was quite pleased with the result!

Gurnet Rock rises off Nonsuch Island on the south shore reef line. It took a battering in Hurricane Fabian in 2003, but is still standing. Apparently sharks come through the reef line near this rock at night!

Sunrise through Red Mangroves

Early morning light on the waves gently washing in through the red mangroves at Blue Hole Nature Reserve in Castle Harbour. The roots of these plants arch out into the sand and silt to support themseves. The black mangroves are notable for their roots which grow vertically up out of the sand like snorkels, and essentially carry out that function. Properly, they're called pneumatophors. I'll show a photograph of them sometime.

A Golden Silk Spider looming up on a dainty Dew Drop Spider. In fact the dew drops spiders seem to co-exist happily with the golden silk spiders - it is the male golden silks which really have to fear for their lives!

The Unfinished Church, St Georges

These pillars and arches may appear to be in ruins, but in fact the church was never built in its entirety anyway. The church was under construction when a fire damaged the cathedral and so funds were diverted away to that. Thus the apparent ruins continue to stand over the Town of St Georges today.

I used the 'Orton' blur method on this photograph which I thought gave it a sort of light that made it seem not quite dead. Hope you enjoy this photo!

Not sure why I'm looking so sad, but blue is for ocean, along with the wave. Also Bermudianas, our endemic national flower, and fitted dinghy sailing boats, along with the Island. There would probably be too many 'Bermudian icons' to name just one. But these dinghies are very traditional here and races are held in the summer. You are allowed as much sail a you can manage, and as many crew as can stay afloat!

Chick-of-the-Village

Another of Bermuda's birds: The Chick-of-the-Village. If you don't see one you will probably most definitely have heard one calling out to itself by name. Its proper name is a White Eyed Vireo and it is believed that the birds in Bermuda are an endemic sub-species. Their wings are smaller than their North American counterparts.

A weird and wonderful looking fish! Although these are invasive fish that originated in the Pacific but have made their way to the Caribbean and are causing a real problem in the islands down there. In Bermuda they are luckily not yet plentiful, but studies are already underway to learn about their impact on our reefs and also to cull them. I'm grateful not to speak from my own experience, but I know that they pack a powerful blow with their venom.

A bright colourful sunrise this morning from the east end of Warwick Long Bay Beach. It's gradually getting to be sunrise a little later in the mornings, wake up call twenty minutes to six. The sun is also noticably rising (and setting) to the south now. I know this photo is rather overexposed but I thought it best showed the brightness of the new day.

An extra photograph today - the kiskadee was a bonus to make up for the gap a couple of days ago. This was the scene along the shoreline at Spittal Pond. I think probably one of the most beautiful spots to view the sunrise.

The kiskadee showing off its yellow belly. Aside from the bright flashes of colour, its call is very distinctive, calling itself by name. It is actually sitting on a dead cedar which was killed in the 1940's by the cedar blight.

Oops I missed a post. Sorry! After the lizard post I decided I could take a photograph of a kiskadee as a follow-up. But I didn't actually see one when I had my camera in hand. In the evening we went out boating in Harrington Sound under gorgeous evening light as shown here, and I didn't get a chance to post this yesterday. Hope you enjoy this one!

Lizard Babe

A baby Jamaican Anole that I saved from the clutches of my kitten's jaws! (Then willingly placed on a pretty hibiscus.)

These lizards are common sights in Bermuda, although they were introduced and form part of a long and faily silly chain: Fruit flies were a nuisance so the anole was introduced. But when a tiny cedar scale insect was introduced by mistake on imported Christmas trees and decimated the endemic Bermuda Cedar trees, no biologicial control could be established because of these lizards. So the yellow Kiskadee was introduced to take care of the lizards. Now these are the biggest problem - it turned out they didn't even like lizards that much but ate pretty much anything else.

Oh, and we still have fruit flies and the cedars sorted themselves out anyway with a resistant strain becoming dominant!

A Visit to the Zoo

In fact, this is the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo. It showcases local fish and also animals from other islands. These are the Caribbean Flamingos. In the early 1990's some were bred and placed back in the wild to begin a new breeding colonies.
