Beach Impressions

Carter House

This pretty 17th century stone cottage is thought to be one of the oldest buildings still standing in Bermuda. Today it is the St David's Island Historical Society Museum.

Tucker House

A plaque on the wall of Tucker House, a Bermuda National Trust property in the Town of St George. What really caught my eye though was the shadows of the rough plastering thrown by the early morning light.

Cottage on Harrington Sound. This definitely competes for top place on my list of dream homes...

Fry

An abstract-y photo of fry jumping, being chased by some larger sploshes, maybe round robins or jacks?

Cassava Leaf in Raindrop

This is the cassava plant whose tuber root with be dug up, scrubbed, peeled, grated, then mixed with egg and layered with chicken to make the most delicious traditional Christmas fare - Cassava Pie. I'm getting ready for Christmas already haha!

End of the day, Back on the moorings

Our family boat, Total Madness or sometimes known more simply as The Red Boat.

Heydon Trust Chapel

I thought it was time to show another photograph of the little Heydon Trust chapel in Somerset, this time looking slightly more obviously a chapel.

In the previous post (24th August) I was interested in the architecture of the external water tank in the rear. But on this side the buttresses are also an interesting feature. The prop-open window blinds show off another vernacular feature of Bermuda buildings - keep the sun off and the rain out while letting light in and keeping the inside cool.

A Pretty Puddle

I suppose you could say I enjoy seeing the ordinary in a new light!

Wet Casaurina Needles

Dragon Wing Begonias

Some pretty red Dragon Wings begonias at the foot of our poinciana tree. I've noticed some wreaths on doors already and am starting to feel a bit Christmas-sy! Well it is middle of November already.

14 November 2008

Pitman's Pond, on the Somerset Long Bay East nature reserve. This piece of property was bought through the 'Buy Back Bermuda' initiative of the Bermuda National Trust and the Bermuda Audubon Society which collected donations from the public. Now this land will be saved from any future development.

My Wheels

Over at Tobacco Road, NYD has been noticing more scooters on the roads in Tokyo as people strive to beat the credit crunch. I knew these were the way forward a long time ago! They're gas rodents + no getting stuck in traffic jams or driving round and round looking for a parking space! So here is my photo to celebrate the 50cc scooter - my Kymco People taking in the views.

Daylilies

These are probably my favourite flowers. These two daylilies are ones which I created through hybridizing other colours. I love the diverse range of colours and patterns of these flowers.

Beach Runner

Finally November...dogs are allowed on the beaches again. Which coincides nicely with the cooler weather that is just right for working off excess energy!

Sky High

Kite surfers make the most of the winter season when fewer people are using the beaches and the wind is stronger. This was on Elbow Beach, Paget.

Cockburn Cut Bridge in Watercolour

Cockburn Cut Bridge links the Dockyard on Ireland Island North, to Ireland Island South. This is facing from the Great South through to the open ocean. I painted this on a watercolour workshop outing with Chris Marson. I was quite pleased with the result!

Morning Glory

Bonus photo to make up for the miss yesterday: a close-up of the ubiquitous morning glory flower.

Morning Glory and Mangroves

Morning glory growing down (or up) a mangrove (another red one, showing off its roots well). This is in the HT North Nature Reserve on the edge of the aptly named Mangrove Lake.

Pirate Ship!

Pirates! I'm not sure what the story is of this rusty ship. It's been anchored in St George's Harbour for quite a while, but this summer was the first time I had noticed its flag!

Gurnet Rock under Towering Clouds

Gurnet Rock rises off Nonsuch Island on the south shore reef line. It took a battering in Hurricane Fabian in 2003, but is still standing. Apparently sharks come through the reef line near this rock at night!

Sunrise through Red Mangroves

Early morning light on the waves gently washing in through the red mangroves at Blue Hole Nature Reserve in Castle Harbour. The roots of these plants arch out into the sand and silt to support themseves. The black mangroves are notable for their roots which grow vertically up out of the sand like snorkels, and essentially carry out that function. Properly, they're called pneumatophors. I'll show a photograph of them sometime.

Spiders

A Golden Silk Spider looming up on a dainty Dew Drop Spider. In fact the dew drops spiders seem to co-exist happily with the golden silk spiders - it is the male golden silks which really have to fear for their lives!

20 October 2008

Sanderling

Sanderling on South Shore. I'm not sure if these are migratory birds, but they're often seen dashing along just in front of the waves during the autumn months.

Holy Trinity Church, Bailey's Bay

Holy Trinity Church, Bailey's Bay
An old Anglican church in Bailey's Bay, Hamilton Parish almost on the shore of Harrington Sound. This has a particular connection with my family as it was the location for the marriage of my first ancestors in Bermuda, in 1782.

Dawn over Turtle Bay, St Davids

Sunrise over the east of the island. This is Turtle Bay, just along from Cooper's Island which has recently been converted to a nature reserve. St David's Light House is just visible on the skyline across the bay.

St James Court

Condominiums with gorgeous views - into Flatts Inlet and out and beyond towards Gibbets Island and the North Shore. My friend's family has an apartment there and they talk about how they can gaze out over the inlet and have competitions counting the number of rays that swim past!

Be a little Twisted

Big it up Bermuda!! My friend noticed one of the Twisted Tea labels features a very cool photo taken by a Daniela in Bermuda.

14 October 2008

Stewart Hall

If you wander the back streets of St Georges, you will likely come across Stewart Hall, built c.1707, which today houses the Bermuda Perfumery.

You can see why he's called a spiny orb weaver, and equally a crab spider!

The Unfinished Church, St Georges

These pillars and arches may appear to be in ruins, but in fact the church was never built in its entirety anyway. The church was under construction when a fire damaged the cathedral and so funds were diverted away to that. Thus the apparent ruins continue to stand over the Town of St Georges today.
I used the 'Orton' blur method on this photograph which I thought gave it a sort of light that made it seem not quite dead. Hope you enjoy this photo!

Larkspur

We don't just have tropical flowers in Bermuda! Here are two versions (to make up for the lack of a post yesterday!) of larkspur, a traditional English cottage annual that is flowering in our Bermuda flower bed.

My Bermuda

Not sure why I'm looking so sad, but blue is for ocean, along with the wave. Also Bermudianas, our endemic national flower, and fitted dinghy sailing boats, along with the Island. There would probably be too many 'Bermudian icons' to name just one. But these dinghies are very traditional here and races are held in the summer. You are allowed as much sail a you can manage, and as many crew as can stay afloat!
